The American Anorexia and Bulimia Association was pioneered in 1983 by individuals who were struggling with eating disorders, their family and friends, John Sargent from the Child Guidance Center, and other prominent professionals in an effort to join together to provide much needed support and other resources to facilitate recovery. Noteworthy professionals from local eating disorders treatment programs (e.g., Renfrew, Belmont, Friends, Graduate) became actively involved in leading this new organization. In 1992, Rhoda Kreiner took over the role of Executive Directorship, and dedicated herself for over 20 years until she retired in 2014. Along its journey, the group relocated to Belmont from Child Guidance. Throughout the years, AABA has continued its commitment to contribute to the eating disorders recovery community in Philadelphia and its surrounding areas.
